Recommendations for spending a day in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

  • Start at the Ramsay House Visitors' Center. This is a good place to start for maps and info on the corner of King & North Fairfax St. at 221 King St. Open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.   703-838-4200 & 800-388-9119

  • There are many  antiques shops with a wide range of merchandise, the corner of Prince & South Royal and heading east towards the Masonic Temple and many are easily within walking distance of The Antique Guild at 113 N. Fairfax St.

  • Lower King St. is the main shopping street of shops and restaurants. Heading towards the river on South Union St. there is Firehook Bakery where you can sit down and enjoy their cafe latte with cookies or sandwiches in their small seating area and take back some of their delicious bread. To check out the bread  baking schedule click the dog  . The Zendog highly recommends the fig & pine nuts loaf on Thursdays.

  • If you like coins & currency, the place to go is The Old Town Coin& Jewelry Exchange located at 213 King St. above the Unique Gift Shop;  Shops hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm, Friday from 10 am to 8 am.   703-548-9024 & 800-787-0731 E-mail them at oldtowncoin@erols.com

  • The Why Not shop located at 200 King St. is a wonderful place to find retro toys like Silly Putty and Gumby and Pokey. Their shop hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 to 5:30, Friday and Saturday from 10 to 9, and Sunday from 12 to 5.

  • If you have interest in glass the Old Town Apothecary Shop is located on the 100 block of South Fairfax St. -One side is a consignment shop and the other half displays a collection of apothecary glass with a small entrance fee.

  • If you are planning a trip the beginning of December, the first Saturday of the month, the annual Scottish Christmas Walk takes place and most favorite of all parades that the city holds. Bagpipes and dogs (Scotties, Irish Wolfhounds & Scottish Deerhounds) are the highlight.
